Benefit Planned For Former K-State Player
August 01, 2013
Wendell Barnhouse is a nationally-known and respected columnist who has spent over 20 years covering collegiate athletics. He has reported from 25 Final Fours and more than three dozen bowl games and has written about the Big 12 and its schools since the conference's beginning. Barnhouse will be updating the Big 12 Insider on happenings and behind-the-scenes information about the conference.

Billy Ray Smith, a defensive end for Kansas State early in the (first) Bill Snyder Era, is in need of help and some friends are rallying and fund raising on his behalf. Smith had an operation to relieve pressure on his spine but it didn’t go as planned and Smith is a paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair. His medical costs are outstripping his financial means.

Your Humble Correspondent is calling on folks in the North Texas area – especially those young whipper snappers who can still hoop – to gather a team and help the former Wildcat.

A basketball tournament will be held at Bishop Lynch High School (in Dallas) on Saturday, August 17. The entry fee is $250 and each team is guaranteed two games. There also will be a dunk and 3-point shooting contest.
