Iowa State Leads after Round One of Womenís Golf Championship
April 27, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan. - After a windy first round, Iowa State finished the first day of play as the leader at the 2012 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship. All teams faced less-than-ideal conditions as wind speeds reached up to 30 mph throughout the day with frequent gusts.

The Cyclones, who have finished fourth the past two years, shot a plus-31 at the par-70, 6,038-yard course at the Lawrence Country Club for a total score of 311. Two strokes separate ISU from the second-place Baylor Bears. BU fired a plus-33 score of 313 and is trailed by Oklahoma State (315), Oklahoma (316) and Texas A&M (318).

Reigning champion Texas sits in eighth place, but is without Madison Pressel, the 2011 individual champion, who sustained an injury prior to the event.

Iowa State entered the weekend ranked 38th with two top-3 finishes in its last two events. The Cyclones were led by Sasikarn On-Iam, who sits in a three-way tie for first place. Along with On-Iam, teammate Punpaka Phuntumabamrung also finished in the top 10 for ISU, tied for 10th place.

On-Iam, Hayley Davis (Baylor) and Chirapat Jao-Javanil (Oklahoma) ended the round with a plus-five score of 75 to top the individual leaderboard. On-Iam shot par on 13 holes, with five bogeys. Davis, a freshman, recorded one birdie on hole 9.

Jao-Javanil along with Kelsey Vines (Oklahoma State) led the field with four birdies on the day. The Sooner, who also had four birdies in the opening round last year, recorded seven bogeys and two double bogeys. Vines is tied with four others in fourth place.

Baylor has three individuals in the top 10 with Chelsey Cothran and Stani Schiavone both tied for 10th with eight-over par scores of 78.

Inclement weather forced a change in tee times. Originally all groups were set to tee off at hole 1, but the potential of possible severe storms resulted in groups teeing off at hole 1 and 10.

The second round gets underway Saturday at 8 a.m. with all teams teeing off from hole 1 with Kansas and Texas Tech beginning the day. The last tee time is set for 11:12 a.m.
