Big 12 Baseball Opens NCAA Regional Play
June 01, 2012
On the first day of the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championship Big 12 teams went 1-2 with Texas A&M claiming the lone league win. Conference teams are slated to play four more regional games on Saturday.

No. 1 Texas A&M 4, No. 4 Dayton 1 (College Station Regional)
Junior Michael Wacha tossed 7.1 shutout innings as top-seeded Texas A&M defeated No. 4 seed Dayton (31-29), 4-1, on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park in College Station, Texas.

Wacha, a Texarkana, Texas-native allowed only five hits, while striking out nine to improve to 9-1 on the year.

Junior right fielder Tyler Naquin, jumpstarted the Aggie offense early as he doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning before coming around to score the evening's first run on a RBI single by senior Matt Juengel.

Texas A&M (43-16) extended its lead as Brandon Wood and Mikey Reynolds drew back-to-back two-out walks, the last of which pushed home the Aggies' second run of the day in the bottom of the third.

Senior Jacob House, who went 3-for-5 during the contest to post his 19th multi-hit game of the season, made it 3-0 Aggies with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth.

A pair of Dayton errors conspired to swell the A&M lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh before the Flyers posted their lone run of the night when C.J. Gillman was called safe on a collision at the plate that followed an Aggie error in the frame.

The Aggies advance to face Mississippi on Saturday at 6:35 p.m.

No. 4 Oral Roberts 4, No. 1 Baylor 2 (Waco Regional)
Baylor, the No. 4 overall nation seed, had its 22-game home win streak snapped as fourth-seeded Oral Roberts (38-23) knocked off the Bears, 4-2, at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.

Baylor (44-15) carried a 2-0 lead to the sixth inning, but Oral Roberts took advantage of three doubles and an error to score three runs in that inning. The Golden Eagles would add an insurance run in the eighth on a solo home run.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but left the bases loaded as ORU escaped further damage. Big 12 Player of the Year Josh Ludy extended the Baylor lead to 2-0 in the third inning as he powered a solo home run over the left-field wall. It was his Big 12 best 14th homer of the year.

The Golden Eagles' three-run sixth started with a leadoff double, and one out later, Bennett Pickar cut Baylor's lead to 2-1 with a RBI double. Baylor starter Josh Turley got a flyout for the second out of the inning, and just missed on a two-strike pitch to Logan Domenico before giving up a looping double to right-center field that tied the game.

ORU went in front when Brandon Healy bounced an infield single up the middle and Langford's throw home went wide, allowing Domenico to score an unearned run. Goro added an insurance run with a two-out solo homer in the eighth inning to cap the scoring at 4-2.

Turley (9-1) took his first loss of the season after allowing two earned runs in 5.2 innings.

BU (44-15) will now face UT-Arlington at 2 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. During the regular season, the Bears and Mavs split two games with each winning on their home field.

No. 1 Arizona 15, No. 4 Missouri 3 (Tucson Regional)
Fourth-seeded Missouri lost its first game of the NCAA Championship, 15-3, to top-seeded Arizona at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.

The Tigers (32-27) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then held a 3-2, but a seven-run fourth inning by the Wildcats (39-17) put the game out of reach. Tiger starter Blake Holovach was tagged with the loss after he went 3.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs.

MU will now play in an elimination game on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) against second-seeded New Mexico State.

Oklahoma, which was scheduled to open play against Appalachian State, will have to wait until Saturday to begin its NCAA run, after rain postponed all of Friday's games at the Charlottesville regional. The Sooners and Mountaineers are slated to get underway at 5 p.m. CT.
