The Walter Camp Football Foundation named 11 Big 12 student-athletes to the preseason watch list for the 2012 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
Candidates include Arthur Brown (Kansas State), Tyler Lockett (Kansas State), Nigel Malone (Kansas State), Tony Jefferson (Oklahoma), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Kenny Stills (Oklahoma), Joseph Randle (Oklahoma State), Alex Okafor (Texas), Seth Doege (Texas Tech), Tavon Austin (West Virginia) and Geno Smith (West Virginia).
Kansas State and Oklahoma each have three players on the list, an honor shared by only one other team in the nation. The list of 50 athletes represents a total of 37 schools.
The award is named after Walter Camp, an athlete and football coach at Yale University in the 1880s who is often referred to as "The Father of American Football."
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in mid-November. The 2012 Walter Camp Player of the Year, which is voted on by the 124 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on December 6.
The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation's annual national awards banquet on January 12, 2013 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Conn.
