This marks the fourth career honor for Pelger, who was named Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions in 2011 and also was the Rookie of the Week once in 2010. Hahn earns her fifth career honor after garnering four defensive awards in 2011.
Attea becomes the second West Virginia freshman honored with Rookie of the Week this season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kaitlynn Pelger, Kansas State, MB, Jr., Olathe, Kan.
Pelger averaged 4.18 kills per set while hitting .440 over the weekend at the Golden Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla. She added 2.45 digs and 1.09 blocks, while her five aces led the team. The Wildcats improved to 12-0 with wins over Tulsa, No. 10 Minnesota and No. 20 Dayton at the event. The junior opened the tournament with a double-double as she posted 11 kills on a .455 hitting percentage to go with 12 digs against Tulsa. Against the Golden Gophers, Pelger played a huge role down the stretch as she led the team with 16 kills. She also added nine digs, five blocks and three aces. Four of her kills came in the shortened fifth set alone as K-State hit an amazing .818 as a team with nine kills and no errors to dominate Minnesota in the deciding set. To close the weekend, the middle blocker pounded out 19 kills and hit an impressive .654 against Dayton. She also recorded six digs, two blocks and a pair of aces. Pelger ranks in the Big 12's top 5 in hitting percentage, kills, service aces and points.
DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Kristen Hahn, Iowa State, L, Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Hahn posted the second 25-plus dig performance of the 2012 season on Saturday as No. 25 Iowa State knocked off No. 1 Nebraska in the program's first-ever win over a top-ranked team and the first win over the Huskers in Ames. Hahn's 26 digs was a match-high and leaves her with a 4.63 average for the season, ranked fourth in the Big 12. The junior out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, also recorded two service aces and two assists in the win.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Nikki Attea, West Virginia, OH, Fr., East Amherst, N.Y.
Attea was named MVP of the Gold and Blue Classic after posting 34 kills, 3.40 kills per set, a .304 hitting percentage, 17 digs and eight blocks over the weekend. She had double-digit kills in all three matches this week and posted double-doubles in back-to-back matches against Robert Morris and Cleveland State. In the Mountaineers' three matches (all five sets) last week, Attea led WVU with 49 kills, 3.27 kills per set, a .278 hitting percentage and was third on the team in digs (28) and total blocks (10). She is currently ranked second on the team in kills (120), fifth in digs (62) and third in total blocks (33).
