Brandon Stone (Texas) and Kim Kaufman (Texas Tech) have been named September's Big 12 Golfers of the Month. Stone is the first freshman to win the men's award since Texas' Jordan Spieth took home the honor last October.
Brandon Stone, Texas, Fr., Pretoria, South Africa
Stone, who won the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate by two strokes, leads the Longhorns with a stroke average of 69.50, with three competitive rounds in the 60s. He is the top-ranked player in the Big 12 per Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and ranks second nationally. The freshman was named the National Player of the Week by both Golfweek and Golfworld magazines following his season-opening victory. Stone's performance led the Longhorns in their NCAA title defense to a five-shot victory at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Kim Kaufman, Texas Tech, Sr., Clark, S.D.
Kaufman led Texas Tech to a dominating performance in the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic as the Lady Raiders claimed the tournament title by 27 strokes, the second-largest margin of victory in school history. The senior was one of three Lady Raiders among the top five individuals as she finished second with a 5-under 211 score. The mark matched the fourth-lowest 54-hole total in school history. It also matched Kaufman's second-lowest 54-hole total in her career. It was Kaufman's highest finish in a tournament during her collegiate career and marked the third straight year the Clark, S.D.-native has recorded a top-10 finish at the tournament. In the process, Kaufman helped the Lady Raiders open the season with a tournament title for only the third time in program history and the first since 1995. The victory propelled Texas Tech up the national polls as the Lady Raiders were ranked No. 1 nationally by Golfstat entering this week and No. 3 by Golfweek Magazine. Both rankings are the highest for Texas Tech in program history.
