Weber Takes Over A Veteran Kansas State Team

Story line
Bruce Weber coached the last nine seasons at Illinois, a job he inherited when Bill Self left the Illini to take over at Kansas. Weber now finds himself coaching the Jayhawks' in-state rival as he follows Frank Martin, who left Manhattan to take the job at South Carolina. Two seasons after replacing Self, Weber and Illinois lost to North Carolina in the 2005 national championship game. This season Kansas State returns six of the top seven scorers from last year's team that won 22 games

Senior guard Rodney McGruder (15.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, .385 on 3-pointers), sophomore guard Angel Rodriguez (8.3 ppg, 101 team-high assists), junior guard Will Spradling (9.4 ppg), senior center Jordan Henriquez (7.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, team-high 76 blocks), senior guard Martavious Irviing, sophomore forward Thomas Gipson.

Coach Weber says
"I'm very fortunate to walk into a job where we have a very good team coming back. ... We have a veteran group back, lot of minutes from last year led by our three seniors, Rodney McGruder, of course, one of the top players in the league last year, Jordan Henriquez and Martavious Irving. If we're going to have success, we need those guys to have good years."

Kansas State returns four starters and 85.9 percent of its scorers. Six of its top seven scorers from last year return. ... Kansas State has won at least 21 games each of the last six seasons and during that time has won at least nine Big 12 games each season. Over the last six seasons, the Wildcats have finished no lower than fifth in the Big 12. ... Senior guard Rodney McGruder has been all-Big 12 each of the past two seasons. He's the only returning player in the Big 12 to have been named All-Big 12 first, second or third teams in each of the last 2 years. ... Bruce Weber has won four conference titles - two at Southern Illinois and two at Illinois.
