Defending Champion Baylor Hungry For Another Title
November 05, 2012
Story line
After making history with a 40-0 season and a national championship, Baylor will have no problem finding a goal and incentive for this season. Only four schools have won back-to-back national championships – Louisiana Tech, USC, Connecticut and Tennessee. The Lady Bears want to put Baylor's name on that list. With all five starters returning, along with consensus player of the year Brittney Griner, the goal of winning consecutive national titles is certainly attainable.

Coach: Kim Mulkey, 13th season at Baylor, 338-74.
Last season: 40-0 overall, 18-0 in Big 12, 1st.
NCAA Tournament: Won national championship.

Top players
Senior center Brittney Griner (23.2 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 206 blocked shots, 60% FG, 80% FT), junior guard Odyssey Sims, 14.9 ppg, 174 assists, 118 steals), senior forward Destiny Williams (10.1 ppg, 9.1 rpg); senior guard Jordan Madden, senior guard Kimetria Hayden, freshman guard Alexis Prince.

Coach Mulkey says
"The goal for our basketball team is to win championships. We'd like to win another Big 12 Championship, and we'd like to win a National Championship. … You have to talk about complacency. You have to talk about hunger. You have to talk about all of those things. Because I think when you have a group of seniors who did go 40-0, you don't want them to become bored in practice. I think what helps them is the fact that they want to be an elite group."

Baylor won all six of its NCAA Tournament games by double digits. The Lady Bears' closest game was a 59-47 win over Stanford in Final Four semifinal. … In her first three seasons, Brittney Griner has averaged 21.6 points and 8.6 rebounds a game with a Big 12-record 594 blocked shots. She is the first NCAA player with 2,000 career points and 500 blocked shots. … In the NCAA tournament last season, Griner dunked twice. That matched Candace Parker for most dunks by a woman in NCAA tournament play and during a college career (seven). … Alexis Prince, a 6-1 guard, was named the Big 12's preseason freshman of the year in a vote by the coaches.
