Oklahoma Captures 2013 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship

For the second straight season, the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners took home the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship with a total score of 197.200 Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The Sooners claimed their sixth Big 12 title and fifth in the last six years.

Iowa State placed second with a season-best score of 196.175 while league newcomers West Virginia took third (194.675).

OU led through all rotations, taking the top spot in all events. The Sooners were paced by Taylor Spears, who claimed the all-around title with a total score of 39.600. The junior entered the meet ranked No. 1 nationally on beam and finished on top in that event, tying for first with a score of 9.900 while also claiming the bars title with a 9.950. She also took second on floor (9.900) behind teammate Haley Scaman’s winning score of 9.950.

OU’s Maile’ana Kanewa was tops on vault with a 9.925, followed by fellow Sooner Brie Olson (9.900).

At the conclusion of the meet, the Conference also announced the annual awards as determined by a pre-championship vote of the league’s head coaches.

Spears was recognized as Gymnast of the Year, becoming the first Sooner to be awarded the accolade since 2008 (Kiara Redmond-Sturms). Scaman was named Newcomer of the Year, and OU’s Lauren Alexander earned Event Specialist of the Year. Iowa State’s Elizabeth Stranahan took home the inaugural Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

OU’s K.J. Kindler took home the Big 12 Coach of the Year award for the seventh time in her career and her fourth as head coach of the Sooners.

The All-Big 12 Championship team was selected at the conference championship, which included the top three finishers plus ties from each event and in the all-around competition.

The Conference’s three squads will await their fate with NCAA Regional selections announced on Monday, March 25. The NCAA Championships will be held April 19-21 at Pauley Pavillion in Los Angeles.
