April 25, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. – Kansas and Kansas State secured first round wins at the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The eighth-seeded Jayhawks tallied a 4-1 victory over ninth-seeded Iowa State, while No. 7 seed K-State swept 10th-seeded West Virginia, 4-0.

Women’s action continues on Friday with four quarterfinal contests, while men’s play opens with two quarterfinal matches. Play for both begins at 9 a.m. CT.

Kansas (11-9) took the doubles point with an 8-3 win from the Victoria Khanevskaya and Anastasia Trubica at the No. 3 spot, and then an 8-4 victory by Dylan Windom and Maria Jose Cardona at the No. 2 position.

In singles play, Anastasia Trubica gave KU a 2-0 lead with a win over ISU’s Emma Waites, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 5. The two squads would then exchange points at the third and sixth positions before KU freshman Maria Jose Cardona clinched the victory for the Jayhawks with her No. 2 singles win over Ksenia Pronina, 7-6, 6-3. Kansas will face top-seeded Baylor Friday at 9 a.m. Iowa State drops to 8-15 for the year.

K-State’s tandem of Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic won at No. 1 doubles 8-1, securing the point for the Wildcats (10-10) after WVU had to forfeit the match at the No. 3 spot. The Mountaineers also had to forfeit at the No. 6 singles position, so K-State held a 2-0 lead after doubles play.

Straight-set victories from Ana Gomez Aleman at No. 5 and Ivana Kubickova at No. 3 singles gave K-State the 4-0 victory. The Wildcats will now face second-seeded and regular season co-champions Texas Tech Friday at 3 p.m., while the Mountaineers fall to 4-17 on the season.
