Frances Silva (West Virginia), Abby Smith (Texas) and Isabelle Kerr (Texas) have earned Big 12 Soccer weekly accolades for games played from Sept. 6 - 9. This marks the third Big 12 weekly award for Smith dating back to last season while Silva notches her second weekly honor and Kerr earns the first award of her career.
Offensive Player of the Week
Frances Silva, West Virginia, F, Sr., Overland Park, Kan.
Silva notched a goal in each of WVU’s games vs. top-12 teams in last weekend’s Duke Nike Classic. Silva struck first in the No. 9 Mountaineers’ 1-1 double-overtime draw at No. 12 Duke on Friday as she took advantage of earned opportunity following a Duke foul near the right flank. Silva then started the Mountaineers’ comeback effort against No. 1-ranked North Carolina on Sunday. Down 4-0 in the second half, she put WVU on the board in the 59th minute, converting the team’s first penalty kick of the season. Taken down in the box, she put a low shot past UNC keeper Anna Sieloff. Silva then set-up junior Kate Schwindel for the team’s second score less than four minutes later, as she settled a cross from Kelsie Maloney in the box. The Mountaineers became the first team to score twice against the Tar Heels this season. Additionally, WVU was the first non-conference opponent to score two goals vs. UNC in a regular-season contest since 2011.
Defensive Player of the Week
Abby Smith, Texas, GK, So., Plano, Texas
Smith turned in a stellar defensive performance, playing all 180:00 in goal for Texas in the Longhorns’ wins over Samford and Illinois State last weekend. On Friday, Smith recorded a shutout in Texas’ 2-0 victory over Samford with three saves, one of them coming on a one-on-one in the 18th minute where she quickly dove to her right to stop a shot by Samford’s Malcanisha Kelley. The save came just moments after Texas had scored on the other end to go up 1-0. Smith’s biggest test of the weekend came in the second half of the Longhorns’ 2-1 victory over Illinois State. She corralled another one-on-one opportunity against Redbird freshman Dagny Olson in the 74th minute and anticipated a powerful Rachel Tejada penalty kick to earn the save and ensure the Texas win.
Newcomer of the Week
Isabelle Kerr, Texas, D, Fr., Austin, Texas
Kerr, who has started each of her first six matches at Texas, played all 180:00 of the Longhorns’ pair of wins over Samford and Illinois State last weekend in Austin and tallied her team-leading first and second assists of her young freshman season. On Friday, Kerr sent a cross from the left side of the 18-yard box that ricocheted into the air off Samford keeper Katie Peters, which found the feet of Kelsey Shimmick, who put it away mid-air on a kick over her head. On Sunday, Kerr took one of UT’s 10 corner kicks in the Illinois State game, sailing the ball toward the far post to find Brooke Gilbert, who headed the ball past ISU keeper Aryn Newsom for the game-winning goal in the 44th minute.
