Texas’ Bailey Webster along with Iowa State’s Kristen Hahn and Baylor’s Tola Itiola have been named Big 12 volleyball weekly award winners for matches played Oct. 9-12.
Hahn’s Defensive Player of the Week distinction is her third this season and 15th all-time. She is now tied with former Cyclone libero Ashley Mass for the most career weekly honors in league history. Hahn has earned the defensive award at least three times in each of the past three seasons. Webster, the Offensive Player of the Week selection, claims her second career honor. Itiola earned the Rookie of the Week award.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bailey Webster, Texas, Sr., OH, Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls
Webster led the league in kills (4.86) and points (5.07) last week as the Longhorns posted a 2-0 mark, defeating Texas Tech on Wednesday and Kansas on Saturday. The win over the Jayhawks gave UT a 5-0 Big 12 record and sole possession of first place in the league standings. Webster also hit a combined .455 over the two matches. Against the Red Raiders, the senior recorded 14 kills with just one error on 22 attempts for a .591 hitting percentage. On Saturday in Lawrence, she recorded 20 kills with only 3 errors for a .386 hitting mark.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kristen Hahn, Iowa State, Sr., L, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy
Hahn, a two-time All-American and the two-time defending Big 12 Libero of the Year, continues to be a dominant defensive player for the Cyclones, as she had another outstanding week in helping lead Iowa State to two 3-0 sweeps last week. Against Kansas State, Hahn had her 41st career 20-dig match with her 20 digs against the Wildcats. In Saturday’s win against WVU, Hahn’s 54-match streak with at least 10 digs looked in danger of ending after having only two digs in the opening frame. However, Hahn got more involved in the final two sets of the sweep against the Mountaineers, posting 19 digs for the match. Hahn ended the week with 39 digs at a 6.50 digs per set average, which led the league by over 1.25.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tola Itiola, Baylor, Fr., MH, Plano, Texas/Carrollton Christian Academy
Itiola was a key element to Baylor’s first Big 12 road victory last Wednesday in Morgantown, W. Va. as the Bears swept WVU. The freshman middle hitter had zero attacking errors and seven kills on a .583 hitting percentage. She also tied for the team lead with four assisted blocks. Her .583 hitting percentage was the best in the league over the course of last week, while her 1.33 block average tied for fifth-best.
