Story line
Don't call it a formula or a system. Just say this: In three seasons as Iowa State's coach, Fred Hoiberg has mixed transfers with returning players to create teams that have reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last two seasons. With three starters to replace, Hoiberg will count on Marshall transfer DeAndre Kane to take over at point guard. Forwards Georges Niang and Melvin Ejim (who is out four to six weeks with a sprained knee) are the returning starters; they're perhaps the most versatile and hard-working front-court duo in the Big 12.

Coach: Fred Hoiberg, 62-39 in three seasons.
Last season: 23-12 overall, 11-7 in Big 12, tied 4th.
NCAA Tournament: Lost in NCAA Tournament third round.

Top players
Senior forward Melvin Ejim, sophomore forward Georges Niang, senior guard DeAndre Kane, freshman guard Matt Thomas, freshman guard Monte Morris, junior forward Dustin Hogue, sophomore guard Naz Long.

Coach Hoiberg says
"I'm still trying to figure out what exactly we are as a group. What will our identity be? But I like what I've seen. I think our guys feel a little bit of respect with being picked in the top half of our league. Will we live up to that? I don't know yet. Hopefully we'll continue to evolve and come together. We've been getting better every week, and hopefully we'll continue on that trend."
