Ridley, Wiggins Honored With Menís Basketball Weekly Awards

After leading their teams to two wins last week, sophomore center Cameron Ridley (Texas) and freshman guard Andrew Wiggins (Kansas) have been chosen the Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week.  Ridley’s award is the first weekly accolade for a Texas player this year and first overall since February 20, 2012.  Wiggins is recognized for the second time as top rookie and his award marks the eighth weekly honor for KU in 2013-14.

Ridley averaged a double-double in Texas’ wins over Kansas State (67-64) and at Baylor (74-60).  The sophomore center recorded 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game while converting 10-of-19 (.526) from the field.  He also made 6-of-8 from the free throw line in 27.0 minutes per contest.  Ridley started with 18 points, six boards and three rejections versus the Wildcats, before posting eight points and a career-high 14 rebounds at Baylor.  He leads the team in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and blocked shots (48), with his rejection total ranking third in the Big 12.

Wiggins had two double-figure scoring efforts as the Jayhawks extended their win streak to six games with victories over Baylor (78-68) and at TCU (91-69).  The freshman guard averaged 22.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 55.0 percent.  He opened the week with 17 points against the Bears, including 11 points in the second half.  Wiggins was then the main catalyst versus the Frogs with a career-best 27 points, including 19 in the first half.  He also made 19-of-22 (.864) from the free throw line on the week and leads all Big 12 freshmen in scoring with 15.8 points per game.
