ATHENS, Ga. – Baylor’s 13th-ranked women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 4 Virginia in the NCAA Championships Round of 16 on Thursday at the Hopkins Indoor Facility.
The match was forced inside, after rain in the Athens area made playing outdoors hazardous.
The loss ends Baylor’s season at 26-7 and snaps a 16-match win streak for the Lady Bears.
To open the contest, BU lost its first doubles point since March 15 by dropping matches on courts one and three.
First, the 84th-ranked pairing of Blair Shankle and Alex Clay fell to Danielle Collins and Maci Epstein at the No. 3 position, 8-4. It was the first loss of the season for the BU pairing, after being 13-0 together.
Virginia clinched the point as Victoria Kisialeva and Jordaan Sanford came up short against Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi, 8-5.
In singles play, Virginia quickly extended its lead as 40th-ranked Kiah Generette dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to fourth-ranked Julia Elbaba, 6-0, 6-1, at the top of the lineup.
Freshman Blair Shankle provided Baylor with is lone win of the day, upsetting 76th-ranked Rachel Pierson, 6-0, 7-6(5) at the No. 4 spot.
From that point, Virginia wrapped things up with victories on courts two and three.
The 46th-ranked Sanford was beaten by No. 53 Stephanie Nauta, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot.
To end the match, No. 81 Burgic had a 10-match win streak stopped as she lost to No. 32 Danielle Collins, 6-4, 6-3 on court two.
Three of the league's men's squads will continue NCAA Championship play on Friday. Texas faces California at 8 a.m. CT, Baylor takes on Illinois at 11 a.m. CT and Oklahoma will meet Kentucky at 3 p.m. CT.
