Big 12 Sends Three Men's Tennis Squads to Elite Eight

ATHENS, Ga. – For the first time in Big 12 history, three of the league's men's tennis teams have advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Team Championships. Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas all picked up Sweet 16 victories in Athens, Georgia to advance to the round of eight.

Sixth-ranked Baylor (26-5) swept No. 12 Illinois (24-9), 4-0, Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to earn a spot in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships. BU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Baylor's pairing of Julian Lenz and Michel Dornbusch was first to finish, recording an impressive 8-3 win over Blake Bazarnik and Farris Gosea, at the No. 3 spot.

Third-ranked Lenz was the first Baylor player off court in singles play after securing a 6-2, 6-2 win  at the top of the lineup over eighth-ranked Jared Hiltzik to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match. Dornbusch clinched the match's deciding point on court four to propel the Bears into the quarterfinal round of the Championships. Baylor will face No. 4 Virginia at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday.

For just the second time in program history, the Oklahoma men advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 victory over the 15th-seeded Kentucky Wildcats.The Sooners (26-3) topped Kentucky (23-10) for the second time this season. The first victory came in February when OU claimed a 5-2 victory at home.

The Sooners took the doubles point after wins on courts one and two. In singles, all six Sooners cruised to first set wins. Guillermo Alcorta put the Sooners up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the premier spot. Andrew Harris followed close behind with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4. Clinching the match was Dane Webb at the No. 3 position. The junior notched a 6-3, 6-3 win to seal the victory. OU will meet North Carolina on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.

Texas defeated California on Friday afternoon, 4-1. The ninth-ranked Longhorns (23-5) advance to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals to face top-seeded USC on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. It marked the second time Texas defeated Cal this season, including a 4-2 Longhorn victory in the consolation round of the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship in Houston on Feb. 16.

Texas notched the doubles point after wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Soren Hess-Olesen, Big 12 Player of the Year, claimed the 'Horns' first singles victory when he knocked off Cal's 55th-ranked Ben McLachlan 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 spot. Freshman George Goldhoff provided UT's match-clinching point for the second time in the NCAA tournament action. Goldhoff weathered a two-break deficit at 3-1 to win the first set, 7-5, against Cal's Andre Goransson. The ITA Texas Region Rookie Player of the Year followed with 6-3 second-set victory to clinch the match.

The Lady Bears were the lone conference women's squad to compete in the Sweet 16. Baylor dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 4 Virginia in the NCAA Championship Round of 16 on Thursday to end its 2014 campaign.
