Big 12 Collects Eight All-America Selections
June 11, 2014
Baseball America and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association announced the 2014 All-America Teams with the Big 12 totaling eight selections between the two outlets.
Brendan McCurry (Oklahoma State), Brandon Finnegan (TCU) and Preston Morrison (TCU) received All-America honors from both outlets. McCurry earned a first team designation on the NCBWA team and a second team selection by Baseball America. Morrison was honored on the second team by both, while Finnegan picked up a second team and a third team recognition.
Zach Fish (Oklahoma State) and Mak Payton (Texas) were also honored on the Baseball America third team.
McCurry capped his two-year OSU career with a standout senior season as the Cowboys’ closer. The right-hander set a school record with 35 appearances and was 5-0 with 19 saves and a 0.38 ERA. He racked up 54 strikeouts in 41.1 innings and allowed just two runs. The 19 saves shattered the previous school record of 10, and McCurry also set the program’s career saves mark with 27.
Finnegan and Morrison have provided the TCU rotation’s 1-2 punch. Finnegan was selected in the first round of the MLB draft, while Morrison was tabbed the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. Finnegan owns a 2.12 ERA entering the College World Series and posted a 9-3 mark this season in 16 starts with 129 strikeouts. Morrison is the Big 12’s ERA leader with a 1.32 mark this season. The junior is 9-4 and has pitched 122.1 innings in 17 games started.
McCurry and Morrison have already earned Louisville Slugger second team All-America status this season, while Finnegan and Fish were third team honorees.
