Three Players Earn First Menís Basketball Weekly Honors

After Baylor, K-State and TCU defeated their opening game opponents by a combined total of 82 points, the three schools boast the first set of men’s basketball weekly award winners for the 2015-16 season. Senior Rico Gathers (Baylor) and junior Wesley Iwundu (Kansas State) earned the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week accolades, while Vladimir Brodziansky (TCU) was named the top newcomer. Gathers is honored for the third occasion, while Iwundu and Brodziansky are recognized for the first time.

Gathers finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and one assist in 23 minutes of the Bears’ 42-point victory over Stephen F. Austin. The senior forward made 8-of-9 (.889) shots from the field and converted two of three attempts from the free throw line. He also helped to clog the lane, limiting SFA to 32.7 percent shooting and helping the Bears outscore their opponents 48-12 in the paint. BU handed the Lumberjacks the largest margin of defeat in four seasons under head coach Brad Underwood.

Iwundu helped the Wildcats to an 80-53 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday. The junior forward recorded his fourth career double-double and his first since his freshman campaign with 23 points and 10 rebounds. It was a career-high scoring output and the rebounding total matched his career best. He led the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and minutes while connecting on 7-of-13 from the floor. Iwundu posted his 15th career double-figure scoring effort en route to his best point total since his first career outing.

PHILLIPS 66 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Vladimir Brodziansky, TCU, F, 6-10, 215, So., Prievidza, Slovakia/Canarias Basketball Academy/Pratt CC
Brodziansky made his first career start in the Horned Frogs 90-77 victory over Southeastern Louisiana. The sophomore forward finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, making 6-of-7 (.857) from the field. He was the only player in the game to record a double-digit rebounding total, while also adding five assists and three blocks.
