Big Challenge Efforts Earn Hield, Roach Weekly Honors

Strong performances in the Big 12/SEC Challenge helped propel Buddy Hield (Oklahoma) and Kerwin Roach (Texas) to the latest Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week awards. Hield is honored for the fourth time in 2015-16, while Roach earns his first accolade. The four player awards for Hield ties for the third-most in a season in Big 12 history, while five different player have earned weekly recognition for the Longhorns in 2015-16.

Hield led Oklahoma to victories at home versus Texas Tech and on the road at LSU in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. In two games, the junior averaged 31.0 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the field, including 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from 3-point range. He led the Sooner comeback from a double-digit deficit at LSU with 32 points, converting seven 3-pointers in the second half alone as OU recorded a two-point victory. Hield has scored at least 30 points in eight outings in 2015-16 and has 11 contests with at least 25 points. He has shot at least 50 percent from 3-point range in each of the past eight games.

Kerwin Roach, Texas, G, 6-4, 170, Fr., Houston, Texas/North Shore
Roach posted 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in Longhorn wins over TCU and Vanderbilt. The freshman guard tallied a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds against the Horned Frogs. He followed that was his first career double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four steals in 30 minutes versus the Commodores. Roach had career highs in points, rebounds, steals, free throws made and minutes over the course of last week. He was 11-of-19 (.578) from the field over two games, with five assists and seven steals. He leads the team in steals (20) and ranks third in assists (30) this season.
