PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stephen Smith, Texas Tech, Jr., OF, Wolfforth, Texas/Frenship
Smith paced the Red Raiders to a 3-1 weekend, hitting .571 overall (8-for-14) with seven runs scored, four doubles, five RBI, two stolen bases, a .857 slugging percentage and a .684 on-base percentage. Smith finished 4-for-5 with three RBI in the season opener against Milwaukee which marked the most hits for a Red Raider on Opening Day since John Capps totaled four in 2006. Three of Smith’s four hits came on doubles which marked the first time a Red Raider had recorded three doubles on Opening Day dating back to the start of the 1987 season. Smith had at least one hit in all four games on the weekend which was capped by a 2-for-3 performance Sunday that featured another double – his fourth on the weekend – as well as two runs scored and an RBI. Smith ended the weekend with at least a share of the Big 12 lead in five categories: hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
BJ Myers, West Virginia, So., RHP, Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound
Myers pitched eight shutout innings to lead WVU to a 3-0 series win at Charleston Southern on Sunday. Myers allowed no runs on five hits with five strikeouts and just one walk. CSU hit into three double plays as Myers faced 26 batters, just two over the minimum in his eight innings. With runners on base, CSU was 0-for-6. Myers faced more than three batters in just two innings - the first and fifth.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Luken Baker, TCU, Fr., LHP/DH, Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge
Baker’s debut for the Frogs was a well-rounded effort as the freshman started in all three games, including on the mound in the Loyola Marymount series finale on Sunday. As the DH in the series, he hit safely in all three games, going 1-for-4 on Friday and Saturday with a run scored in the series opener. Serving as the pitcher/DH on Sunday, Baker made his first collegiate start on the mound and tossed six shutout innings. He allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out six. Along the way, Baker retired the first 10 batters he faced and 15 of the first 16, while allowing just four base runners. At the plate, he helped his cause with a two-run home run in the fifth when TCU was holding a slim 1-0 lead. He finished the game 1-for-3 with the home run and two RBI.
