Quartet Earns First Baseball Weekly Honors of March
March 07, 2016

Jake Wodtke (K-State) has been named the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, while Daniel Castano (Baylor) and Tyler Buffett (Oklahoma State) share the Pitcher of the Week honor. TCU’s Luken Baker claims his second Newcomer of the Week distinction on the young season.

Wodtke and Buffett are first-time weekly award winners, while Castano adds to a Newcomer of the Week honor in 2014, and Baker becomes the first Frog to win Newcomer of the Week multiple times in the same season since TCU joined the league in 2013.

Jake Wodtke, K-State, Jr., 2B, Shawnee, Kan./St. James Academy
Wodtke hit .727 (8-for-11) with a double, triple and 12 RBI in a three-game sweep of UAPB last weekend as he helped the Wildcats bat .411 as a team and score 46 runs. The redshirt junior had multi-hit efforts in all three games, starting with a career-high four hits in the opener last Friday when he went 4-for-5 with a double. He also had three RBI in the first game of the series, which was a season-high until he bested it a day later by driving in a career-high six runs. The six RBI were the most by a Wildcat since 2011. In the finale on Sunday, he reached base safely four times – two hits and two walks – while also stealing two bases, scoring twice and driving in another three runs. During the series, Wodtke came through in each of his at-bats with runners in scoring position, going 5-for-5 in such situations. The junior from Shawnee, Kansas was also 3-for-3 with the bases loaded. The three-game stretch extended his hitting streak to a career-high seven games.

Among Big 12 hitters for the week, Wodtke finished first in average, OBP (.714) and RBI; second in OPS (1.714) and hits (8); and tied for third in stolen bases (2) and runs (6).

Daniel Castano, Baylor, Jr., LHP, Austin, Texas/Lake Travis
Castano tossed a gem at No. 21 Houston on Friday to earn the win, allowing five hits and two walks with a career-high-tying six strikeouts in a season-high seven scoreless innings.

Tyler Buffett, Oklahoma State, Jr., RHP, Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy
Buffett played a significant role in Oklahoma State’s 4-1 week as he made three appearances on the mound, all in relief, going 2-0 without allowing a run in 6.1 innings of work. He also racked up 10 strikeouts while allowing only two hits and one walk.

In the series finale against Incarnate Word on Tuesday, Buffett entered the game in the seventh inning with the score tied 2-2 and worked two innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit, to earn his first victory of the season. He was also the winner in OSU’s series opener against Indiana State as he entered a scoreless game in the eighth inning and retired all three batters he faced, including striking out two, in a game the Cowboys went on to win 1-0. In Sunday’s series finale against the Sycamores, the junior entered the game with the bases loaded in the fifth and OSU trailing 2-0. He got out of the jam and retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced over the next 3.1 innings, racking up five strikeouts along the way.

With his standout efforts last week, Buffett lowered his season ERA to 0.93, which ranks second in the Big 12 this season. He also ranks second in the conference with seven appearances and a .161 opponents batting average and is tied for third with 19 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings of work.

Luken Baker, TCU, Fr., DH/LHP, Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge
Baker led TCU with a .538 average over four games last week as the Frogs went 3-1. Along the way, he posted a pair of three-hit games and a trio of multi-RBI contests. Against UT Rio Grande Valley, Baker reached base all four trips to the plate, going 1-for-1 with three walks in addition to driving in three runs. In Friday’s opener against Gonzaga, Baker served as the starting pitcher and designated hitter. He allowed a pair of runs on five hits in 5 .1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts in a no-decision. He drew a walk in four plate appearances. In Saturday’s 10-2 win over Gonzaga, he went 3-for-4 with three RBI with his first hit of the game giving the Frogs a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In Sunday’s series finale, he was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
