Oklahoma, the 2016 Softball National Champions, has been recognized as the unanimous No. 1 pick in the Big 12 softball preseason poll, as voted on by league coaches. This marks the fifth consecutive time and eighth occurrence in the last nine years the Sooners have collected the honor.
Coming in second with one first place vote is Texas, followed by Baylor in third. The Longhorns and Bears both are coming off NCAA Regional appearances a year ago.
The poll is rounded out with No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Kansas, No. 6 Texas Tech and No. 7 Iowa State. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.
Three All-America selections will be returning to the league in first team pitcher and Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Paige Parker (OU), second team infielder and Big 12 Freshman of the Year Shay Knighten (OU) and third team utility player and Co-Big 12 Player of the Year, Vanessa Shippy (OSU).
The 2017 softball season kicks off with all seven teams competing during opening weekend, starting February 9. Conference play is slated to begin March 24.
