Outdoor Track & Field Honors Announced
May 18, 2017

The Big 12 has announced its 2017 Outdoor Track and Field postseason honors, as selected by the league's head coaches following the Big 12 Outdoor Championship.

Benard Keter of Texas Tech takes home the Men's Big 12 Outstanding Performer of the Year award after winning the 5000-meter and the 3000-meter steeple chase. Keter defended his steeple chase crown by running a 8:49.90 time to score the 10 points for the Red Raiders.

Kansas' Sharon Lokedi claims the Women's Big 12 Outdoor Outstanding Performer of the Year thanks to her dominant exhibition in distance events at the Big 12 Championship. Lokedi took home first place in both the 10000 and the 5000-meter runs, which has happened only seven times in conference history. Lokedi took her second straight 10K title after finishing ahead of the competition by 12 seconds (33:43.28).

Outstanding freshmen honors went to Maxwell Willis of Baylor and Nina Schultz of Kansas State who both took High Point Performer honors at the Big 12 Championship, marking the first time in conference history that two freshmen have claimed the honor.

Willis, who also won indoor freshman of the year honors, captured the 200m and was also a part of the gold medal 4x400m relay for BU. He also tacked on a second place finish as a part of the 4x100m relay and took third in the 100m.

Schultz, who leads the conference in the heptathlon, competed and placed in five separate events throughout the weekend. She took first place in high jump, third place in javelin, fifth in long jump, sixth as a part of the 4x400m relay and seventh in the 100m hurdles.

Coach of the Year honors went to Texas' Mario Sategna for the men and K-State's Cliff Rovelto for the women after both coaches led their teams to first-place finishes at the championship. Texas marked its third straight outdoor championship as K-State recorded its first championship since 2002.

NCAA Preliminary Round Competition is taking place May 25-27 in either Austin, Texas (West Preliminary) or Lexington, Ky. (East Preliminary). Continue to check for updates on conference athletes competing throughout the remainder of NCAA competition.
