Texas Men and Texas A&M Women Lead After Day One

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas A&M women claimed top honors in the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard medley relay while the Texas men swept the two races on day one of the 2008 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

The Missouri men are in first place with 121 points after having four divers receive points in the one-meter event. Trailing them are Texas and Texas A&M with 112 and 109 points, respectively. For the women, Texas A&M is in the lead (80) followed by Missouri (64), Texas (64), Kansas (64), Iowa State (54) and Nebraska (54).

The Aggie women captured the 200-yard medley relay in the opening race with a time of 1:38.76, well ahead of the NCAA automatic qualifying mark. The team consisted of Julia Wilkinson, Alia Atkinson, Triin Aljand and Sarah Woods. The Texas men claimed top honors in the same race as Hill Taylor, Matthew Lowe, Daniel Rohleder, Jeremy Harris swam to a NCAA consideration mark of 1:27.18.

In the 800-yard medley relay, the A&M women took first with a time of 7:05.98, just a tenth of a second off the meet record (7:05.89) set by the Aggies in 2007. Christine Marshall, Kristen Heiss, Beth McCullough, and Codie Hansen earned an NCAA automatic qualifying mark with their first place finish.

Texas men made history in the 800-yard medley relay as Dave Walters, Matt McGinnis, Michael Klueh and Rick Berens broke the American record (6:14.14) by under four seconds with a time of 6:10.55. The time broke both the Big 12 and pool records and earned the foursome an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

UT junior Jonathan Wilcox captured the one-meter diving event with a score of 379.90, becoming the first Longhorn to win the event since 2004.

The championships resume Thursday at 10 a.m. with preliminary action , while the finals are slated for 6 p.m.
