Previous years have produced some memorable upsets which have affected the college football landscape around the country. In four of the previous 13 championships, a team that would have qualified for the national championship game has been knocked out by a loss in the Big 12 Championship (1996 - unranked Texas def. #3 Nebraska; 1998 - #10 Texas A&M def. #1 Kansas State; 2001 - #10 Colorado def. #3 Texas; 2007 - #9 Oklahoma def. #1 Missouri).
Since the first season of Big 12 play in 1996, the league has sponsored a championship game. Per NCAA guidelines, a conference with 12 members may play a 13th football game to determine a champion, provided the regular season is played in divisions.
The Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game has been a huge draw in numerous cities throughout the league. In the 13 previous editions, the contest has been played before a total of more than 888,000 fans. The 2010 Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship will also be played at Cowboys Stadium.
