Destinee Hooker (Texas) and Ashley Mass (Iowa State) have earned the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, for matches of Oct. 26 - Nov. 1. Torri Campbell (Baylor) also has been named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week. Hooker and Mass are both being honored for the 11th time in their careers, while Campbell receives her first accolade.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Destinee Hooker, Texas, OH, Sr., 6-4, San Antonio, Texas/Southwest
Hooker led the Big 12 in points (6.08) and kills (5.33) per set in a pair of victories over No. 8 Nebraska and No. 25 Texas A&M. The San Antonio, Texas native also hit at a .333 clip while averaging 2.67 digs and 0.67 blocks on the week as the Longhorns set a school record for consecutive regular-season wins with 27 straight victories. In UT's sweep of the Huskers, Hooker posted 19 kills on .400 hitting and added 10 digs, two blocks and a service ace. She helped the Longhorns rally back from a 10-4 deficit in the third set for the match victory. Hooker paced a set-ending 10-1 run with six kills, including the final three points of the match. At A&M, the All-American produced 13 kills with six digs and two solo blocks.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley Mass, Iowa State, L, Jr., 5-8, Muskego, Wis./Muskego
Mass averaged 7.62 digs and was perfect on serve receive, committing no errors in 32 attempts. She became the first player in Big 12 history to record 40 or more digs in a match after notching 42 in ISU's 3-2 win over No. 22 Baylor on Wednesday. The 2008 Big 12 Libero of the Year also broke a 14-year old school record with her performance, while also dishing out two assists in the victory. In ISU's two matches against Baylor this season, Mass has broken the conference reocrd for digs in a three-set (33, Sept. 23) and five-set match. Mass followed that outing with 19 digs in a sweep at Colorado. She also had three assists and a service ace against the Buffs as the Cyclones won their 10th straight match. The Muskego, Wis. junior moved into third all-time in the Big 12 for career digs.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Torri Campbell, Baylor, MB, Fr., 6-2, Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo
Campbell registered a career-high 18 kills against No. 9 Iowa State, then had 10 more in a win over Texas Tech to average 3.50 kills on the week. She paced the Bears in kills and hitting percentage (.290) in addition to leading the Big 12 in blocks with 1.25 per set. At ISU, Campbell tallied nine block assists in the five-set match along with a dig. The Amarillo, Texas middle blocker had just two errors in 20 attempts against the Red Raiders while contributing a dig and block assist to BU's 3-0 victory.
