Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh, who set a Big 12 and school record for blocked shots last season, led a record-seven Big 12 players chosen in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft.  The seven first-rounders were the most of any conference in the country and it also marked the fifth straight season that at least one league athlete has been picked in the top 10.  Overall, the Big 12 had 10 athletes selected, tying the league record set in 2008.

Kansas continued the Big 12 choices in the first round as center Cole Aldrich was drafted 11th by the New Orleans Hornets followed by teammate Xavier Henry at No. 12 by the Memphis Grizzlies.  It is the third time in 14 league seasons (2003, 2000) that three players were chosen among the top 12.  Aldrich’s selection also marks the third occasion in the last four years that the Big 12 has had at least two players taken in the top 11.

Guard Avery Bradley of Texas started a parade of three straight Big 12 players chosen when he was picked at No. 19 by the Boston Celtics.  Oklahoma State’s James Anderson was next, going to the San Antonio Spurs at No. 20.  He is the seventh first-round choice from OSU and first since 2005.  Iowa State’s Craig Brackins went at No. 21 to the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to the New Orleans Hornets.  He is the sixth Cyclone since 2000 to be drafted. The three straight Big 12 picks marks the first time in league history that the conference has had three players in a row chosen.

Forward Damion James of Texas rounded out the first-round Big 12 selections, going to the Atlanta Hawks at No. 25.  It marks the second time in school history that the Longhorns have had two players selected in the first round of the same draft. Travis Mays (No. 14, Sacramento Kings) and Lance Blanks (No. 26, Detroit Pistons) were taken in the first round in the 1990 draft.

This year’s draft is also the 13th time in 14 years the Big 12 has had at least one first-round choice.  A total of 71 players from the Big 12 have been selected since the first season in 1996-97.       Kansas has had 18 players chosen - the most of any team in the Conference.  Texas is next with 13, followed by Iowa State (7), Oklahoma (7), Missouri (5), Oklahoma State (5), Texas A&M (4), Colorado (3), Texas Tech (3), Baylor (2), Kansas State (2) and Nebraska (2).

The Big 12 has had at least four players drafted in each of the last seven years.  In addition, there has been at least one league athlete among the top 10 overall selections in 10 of 14 seasons.  Twenty-four players from the Big 12 have been drafted in the past three years.
