January 09, 2012
With 12 wins in his last 13 matches including a perfect 6-0 week, Brent Haynes (Missouri) has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week. During the undefeated stretch, the junior took down two top-four wrestlers and won the Southern Scuffle tournament. It is the first career Big 12 honor for Haynes and the second of the season for the Tigers, after Alan Waters earned the award on December 12.

Haynes posted five victories at the Southern Scuffle event in Chattanooga, Tenn., and then finished off the week a victory in his lone Big 12 match.

In the Southern Scuffle, Haynes opened with two first-period pins over Virginia's Ryan Malo and Navy's Colynn Cook to advance to the quarterfinals.

Next, he upset fourth-ranked Matt Powless of Indiana by technical fall, 15-0. In the semifinal round, Haynes recorded a 6-0 decision over No. 2 Sonny Yohn (Minnesota) to advance to the championship.

He was set to face his third top-four wrestler of the tournament in the finals, but No. 1 Cam Simaz (Cornell) was forced to forfeit due to injury, giving Haynes the title.

Haynes kept his streak alive in Big 12 play on Sunday against Iowa State, as he defeated Cole Shafer by a 22-7 score, his second technical fall over Shafer this season.

After starting the year 1-2, Haynes has won 12 of his last 13 matches and now has five bonus point wins in his last six matches.
