Krais and Lopez Nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

The Big 12 Conference has nominated Ryann Krais (Kansas State) and Krista Lopez (Oklahoma State) for 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. The top 10 honorees and the nine finalists from Divisions I, II and III will be honored, and the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year winner announced at a dinner in Indianapolis on October 14, 2012.         

Krais was the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field champion in the pentathlon and the outdoor champion in the heptathlon. She also placed in both events in the respective NCAA championships with fifth in the pentathlon and 14th in the heptathlon. In addition, Krais won the heptathlon title at the 2011 national championships and was runner-up at the USA Championship. Over the course of her career, she picked up All-America first team honors three seasons.

The psychology major earned the prestigious 2012 NCAA Elite 89 Award for Outdoor Track & Field and was a member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Krais was K-State's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and received the Conference's 2012 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award in recognition of completing 100-plus hours of course credit with a 3.80 or higher grade point average.  

Krais served as team captain and also took part in many community service projects including Marathon Kids, Kids to College, Shoe Drive for Haiti, Vacation Bible School, Mattel Children's Hospital, Special Olympics and Cats for Cans.

Lopez helped guide the Cowgirl soccer team to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight the last two seasons. The forward was named a two-time NSCAA All-Central Region First Team selection and was a two-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree. She was also named twice to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team. Oklahoma State won four Big 12 titles during her career with two regular season and two postseason.

Also a standout in the classroom, Lopez was named the 2011 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for women's soccer and was a two-time selection to the Academic All-America First Team. She earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was a finalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Athlete. Lopez was named one of OSU's Outstanding Seniors and the Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She was also a three-time honoree on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.

Lopez was a 2012 Winter Big 12/Chick-fil-A Community of Championships recipient and a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. She served on the OSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was a volunteer for the Humane Society and Countryside Baptist Church. Other community activities were Family Resource Center, Special Olympics and assistant coach for a Stillwater Soccer Club U10 girls' team.
