Oklahoma center Gabe Ikard has been selected as one of eight finalists for the 2012 Wuerffel Trophy by the All Sports Association, Inc. in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

The Wuerffel Trophy annually honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement. The national award, which recognizes outstanding ambassadors for college football who embody character and excellence, is named after former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, who led the University of Florida to the 1996 national championship.

Ikard has started 33 career games for the Sooners, including eight contests at center this season. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native earned All-Big 12 first team honors from AP and coaches for his performance on the field a year ago. He currently carries a 4.0 GPA in multidisciplinary studies and was one of only three sophomores named to the 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-American team.

A committee that includes the Wuerffel Trophy national directors, selection committee members and past winners will vote on the finalists later this month. The winner will be formally announced on Dec. 4.
