Baylor is on a roll, winning its last three games including an upset of top-ranked Kansas State. Senior quarterback Nick Florence leads the nation in total offense. He gets plenty of help from All-American wide receiver Terrance Williams and running back Lake Seastrunk, the Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year. The Holiday Bowl has a history of high-scoring games. Baylor averages 44 points a game and UCLA averages 35 so expect history to be repeated. Running back Johnathan Franklin had a break-out season, averaging 130 yards per game. Freshman quarterback Brett Hundley threw for 26 touchdowns and is also a running threat.

Chris Thomsen, the team's offensive line coach, is the interim head coach after the departure of Tommy Tuberville to Cincinnati. Offensive coordinator Neal Brown left for the same job at Kentucky, so Sonny Cumbie will take over play-calling duties. Texas Tech lost four of its last five and three of its last six games were decided in overtime. Senior quarterback Seth Doege hopes to close out a stellar two-year career with a victory. Minnesota is led by freshman quarterback Phillip Nelson, who became the starter midway through the season. The Gophers average 21 points a game, which is 97th nationally.

In its first season in the Big 12, West Virginia's bowl opponent reminds of its past as the Mountaineers face Syracuse of the Big East Conference. This is the last hurrah for Geno Smith, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey – three explosive playmakers who were keys to the West Virginia offense the last two seasons. WVU fans will be hoping for a replay of last year's record-setting 70-33 victory over Clemson in the Orange Bowl. The Orange started out 2-4 overall, but were able to gain bowl eligibility by winning five of their last six games... Syracuse's only loss during that span was at Cincinnati.

This is a meaningful game for Texas. The Longhorns won four to start the season, lost two straight, won four more then lost their last two. A bowl victory would provide momentum heading into 2013. Sophomore David Ash, who missed the season finale at Kansas State with an injury, will start against Oregon State. Major Applewhite will take over play-calling duties for Brian Harsin, who left to become head coach at Arkansas State. Oregon State is allowing just 21.3 points per game. Sean Mannion, who came back from a mid-season injury, and Cody Vaz have shared the quarterback duties.

It was a challenging first season in the Big 12 for TCU, with injuries and roster moves forcing the coaching staff to play over two dozen freshmen. Redshirt freshman quarterback Trevone Boykin took over in mid-season and helped TCU finish with a winning record. The Horned Frogs led the Big 12 in total defense. Defensive ends Devonte Fields (the Big 12 defensive freshman of the year) and Stansly Maponga are bookend pass rushers. Their pressure helped a secondary, led by Jason Verrett, lead the Big 12 with 21 interceptions. Michigan State led the Big Ten in defense while its ground-oriented offense is led by Leveon Bell, the nation's third-leading rusher.

Rematches of regular-season games are rate but that's what faces Iowa State and Tulsa. The teams opened the season in Ames with the Golden Hurricanes a slight favorite but the Cyclones prevailed, 38-23. The quarterback for Iowa State was Steele Jantz, but he won't be facing Tulsa in the rematch. Redshirt freshman Sam Richardson played most of the last two games and threw seven touchdowns with no interceptions. Iowa State will need to slow a Tulsa running game that is the nation's 11th best. Defensively, Tulsa has 48 quarterback sacks, the third best mark in the NCAA.

Oklahoma State lost three games decided by one possession so winning an eighth game would put a positive spin on the season. Clint Chelf will get the start at quarterback but J.W. Walsh and Wes Lunt will be available to play. Even though injuries caused a revolving door at quarterback, the Cowboys still finished the season as one of the top offensive teams in college football. Purdue won its last three games to become bowl eligible, but that didn't save Danny Hope, who was dismissed after the regular season. Patrick Higgins will be the interim head coach for the bowl.

Kansas State will try to extend the Big 12's Fiesta Bowl winning streak to four. This will be the final game of Collin Klein's amazing collegiate career. The senior quarterback became the first signal-caller at a BCS school to log 20 rushing touchdowns and 10 passing touchdowns in consecutive seasons. The Wildcats excelled in all three phases this season and will need a complete effort to defeat an explosive Oregon team. Ironically, the Ducks' national championship chances ended on the same night that Kansas State lost to Baylor. Oregon's ground-oriented attack is keyed by running back Kenjon Barner, the NCAA's 5th-leading rusher.

The Cotton could be one of the best of the bowl season. Oklahoma probably deserved a BCS bowl bid. The Sooners' two losses came to two teams (Kansas State and Notre Dame) with a combined record of 23-1. Landry Jones and the offense caught fire down the stretch as the Sooners had to win eight consecutive Big 12 games to earn a share of the title. Oklahoma will try to take some of the luster off of "Johnny Football" – Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. Texas A&M went 10-2 in its first season after leaving the Big 12.
