Kansas’ Maggie Hull and Oklahoma’s Michelle Gascoigne have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Softball Teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Hull earned first team recognition while Gascoigne was named to the second team.

Hull becomes the third softball player in Kansas history to don Academic All-America First Team recognition and the first since Stephani Williams was a four-time honoree from 1991-94.

A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team (2011-2013) award winner, Hull was named to the Academic All-America Third Team in 2012. Last Sunday, Hull graduated with a Bachelor of Science in journalism and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, posting a 3.8 cumulative GPA.

Earlier this month, Hull was bestowed the inaugural Big 12 Softball Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year award after finishing the regular season as the league’s batting champ for the second-straight year. Her .456 batting average broke her own single-season record at Kansas is the third-best in Big 12 history.

Gascoigne becomes just the seventh player in Oklahoma history to be an Academic All-American and the first since Norrelle Dickson was also placed on the second team in 2007.

Sporting an 18-3 record, Gascoigne leads the country with her 0.92 earned run average. She has struck out 198 batters and walked just 29 in 129.0 innings of work. She sits fifth in the nation with 10.6 strikeouts per seven innings and is ninth with 3.96 hits allowed per seven innings.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 18,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
