Wendell Barnhouse is a nationally-known and respected columnist who has spent over 20 years covering collegiate athletics. He has reported from 24 Final Fours and more than three dozen bowl games and has written about the Big 12 and its schools since the conference's beginning. Barnhouse will be updating the Big 12 Insider on happenings and behind-the-scenes information about the conference.

Your Humble Correspondent offers two interesting basketball nuggets – remember, hoops practice starts later this month and the season will start in about two months.

First, Andy Glockner of SI.com analyzes nonconference schedules and he says that Kansas has the nation’s toughest noncon slate. “This Is How You Do It” was the headline over this:

“Yes, yes, 1,000 times yes. And this schedule was in place before the Jayhawks even knew they were getting Andrew Wiggins, so good on them. Beastly slate. I’m going to watch the heck out of this. Even the ‘easy’ games at home are against quality mids like Iona and Towson. They play Duke in Chicago, play true road games at Colorado and Florida, and also host New Mexico, San Diego State and Georgetown. Love it. Easily the best nonconference schedule in the country. The young, talented Jayhawks will be extremely battle-hardened for the Big 12 race.”

And then there’s this humorous item. Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger made history last March when he became the first coach to lead five teams into the NCAA Tournament. The folks at UNLV, his previous coaching stop, apparently miss him. A billboard in Sin City that’s advertising Runnin’ Rebels season tickets is back to the future (2010) because it uses a picture of Kruger.
