Big 12 Duo Selected in NWSL Draft
January 17, 2014

Hayley Haagsma (Texas Tech) and Frances Silva (West Virginia) were both selected in the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League College Draft. Haagsma, the 15th overall pick, will play for Sky Blue FC while Silva was taken 19th overall by FC Kansas City.

Haagsma, a 4.0 student-athlete in Human Development and Family Studies, helped guide the Red Raiders to an 18-2-3 season in 2013 as a premier center-back. The senior from Cerritos, Calif., was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team this year and is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection.

She was one of three defenders from across the country named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. This season, she scored four goals and tallied three assists for the Red Raiders as the squad made its second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament round of 32.

Today’s selection caps off an incredibly successful senior season for Silva. A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-America Second Team, Silva was one of 15 semifinalists for the 2013 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. She led the Big 12 in goals (15), assists (13) and points (43) and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Silva also was named to the 2013 Soccer America MVP Second Team.

Silva led the Mountaineers to two Big 12 titles this season, as the team won its second straight regular-season championship and its first Big 12 Soccer postseason championship. The Mountaineers (16-4-3, 7-1 Big 12) finished the year ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire College Rankings and advanced to their 14th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
