James, Michalec and Kirsch Named Weekly Award Honorees
March 10, 2014
Mac James (Oklahoma), Josh Michalec (Baylor) and Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech) are Big 12 baseball weekly award recipients for games played March 3-9.
James leads the Big 12 in batting for the season and collects the Player of the Week while Michalec is the Pitcher of the Week. Kirsch earns Texas Tech’s third straight Newcomer of the Week honor.
Mac James, Oklahoma, Jr., C/1B, New Braunfels, Texas/Brookhaven College
James hit a team-high .684 (13-for-19) in a 4-1 week for the Sooners. With a hit in all five games last week he increased his hitting streak to eight games. James totaled six runs scored and six driven in. He went 3-for-3 with a RBI double and a stolen base against Abilene Christian on Wednesday. In game one of a doubleheader win over Rutgers on Friday, he knocked in three runs on three hits, including a double, and walked. James doubled for the third straight game as the Sooners won the nightcap, and he finished 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. On Sunday, James went 4-for-4, his second four-hit game of the season, scored three runs and hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the weekend series, he batted .750 (9-for-12). For the week, James slugged 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .714.
Josh Michalec, Baylor, Sr., RHP, Houston, Texas/Memorial
Michalec had a fantastic week as he recorded saves (two of which were multi-inning saves) in all three of Baylor’s wins on the week, allowing just one hit and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings and three appearances while holding hitters to a .067 batting average. On Wednesday in a 3-2 win over Lamar, he entered the game in the eighth inning with a 3-1 lead, two on and no outs. He managed to get out of the jam with a swinging strikeout while allowing just one of Lewis’ runs to score on two productive outs. He then gave up his only hit of the week in the ninth, but erased it on a double play and added another swinging strikeout. On Saturday in a 1-0 win over No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, Michalec entered the game in the seventh with a 1-0 lead, two outs and a runner on first, and got a ground out to end the inning. In the eighth, he erased a walk with a double play to end that frame and followed with a perfect ninth. On Sunday in a 5-4 win over No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, Michalec entered the game in the ninth with a 5-4 lead and stranded a walk as he got a looking strikeout to end the game and give Baylor the series win over the fourth-ranked team in the country.

The senior is a perfect 6-for-6 in save chances in his career as all six chances have come in 2014. Overall, he has a 2.61 ERA out of the pen in seven appearances that cover 10.1 innings. He’s given up three runs on seven hits and five walks with eight strikeouts while holding foes to a .206 batting average.
Adam Kirsch, Texas Tech, Sr., OF, Spring, Texas/Florida International
Kirsch was a key run producer in the middle of Texas Tech’s lineup during a 5-0 record last week, which included a midweek win over New Mexico and a four-game series sweep over New Mexico State. Kirsch batted .412 (7-for-17) with three runs, three doubles, a home run, seven RBI, six walks, .542 on-base percentage and .765 slugging percentage. He carried a 14-game hit streak through the weekend series up until the final game when he saw his streak snapped – giving him the longest hit streak by a Red Raider newcomer since 2004 (Cameron Blair – 20 games). Kirsch racked up three multiple RBI games last week and notched a pair of multi-hit games, including going 3-for-4 with two RBI with a double and home run in Tech’s midweek win over the Lobos of New Mexico. He had a pair of two RBI games against NMSU while going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in game two of the series and then finished out the series with two walks and a sacrifice fly in the game his hit streak came to an end going 0-for-2).
