Oklahoma Captures 2014 Big 12 Gymnastics Title

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

For the third straight season, the third-ranked Oklahoma Sooners took the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship back to Norman with a total score of 198.000 Saturday at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va. The Sooners claimed their second three-peat in the last seven years while setting a new team score championship record.

Iowa State placed second with a score of 196.650 while West Virginia took third (196.375).

OU led through all rotations, taking the top spot in three of the four events. The Sooners were led by Haley Scaman. The sophomore finished second on vault (9.925), second on bars (9.925) and placed first on the floor (9.950).

Maile’ana Kanewa took first in the vault (9.950) and Taylor Spears received the gold on the beam (9.950) for Oklahoma.

The Cyclones’ Camille Santerre-Gervais took the top spot on bars with a 9.950. 

West Virginia’s Hope Sloanhoffer showed why she’s nationally ranked in the All-Around by posting a 39.425 to claim the top spot.

At the conclusion of the meet, the conference announced the annual awards as determined by a pre-championship vote by the league’s head coaches.

Scaman was recognized as Gymnast of the Year, giving Oklahoma the award in consecutive seasons. Iowa State’s Santerre-Gervais earned accolades as the Event Specialist of the Year. Chayse Capps received the Newcomer of the Year for the Sooners.

OU’s K.J. Kindler took home the Big 12 Coach of the Year award for the eighth time in her career and her fifth as head coach of the Sooners.

The All-Big 12 Championship team was selected at the conference championship, which included the top three finishers in each event and in the all-around competition.

The conference’s three squads will await for the NCAA Regional selections announced on Monday, March 24. The NCAA Championship will be held April 18-20 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Alabama.
