Kansas catcher Harli Ridling and Texas Tech pitcher Gretchen Aucoin have earned Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors. Ridling was instrumental in a victory over No. 8 Kentucky while Aucoin helped the Red Raiders to a 5-0 record.
Big 12 Player of the Week
Harli Ridling, Kansas, Fr., Catcher, Sentinel, Okla.
Ridling led the team with a .480 batting average and 12 hits, six of which for extra bases, as Kansas went 5-2 last week. She led the team with two doubles, four home runs, two of which drove in the game-winning runs, and 11 RBIs for a slugging percentage of 1.040 and on base percentage of .519.
Ridling’s fourth homer of the week proved to be the difference maker and propelled the Jayhawks to a 7-5 upset over No. 8 Kentucky, the first win versus a nationally-ranked opponent in 2014. She recorded four RBIs against the Wildcats tying her career-high and collected three multi-hit games.
Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
Gretchen Aucoin, Texas Tech, So., RHP, Ocean Springs, Miss.
Aucoin picked up her eighth win of the season in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against North Texas as she tossed her third complete game of the season, allowing one run off six hits while striking out a career high 13 hitters. Her 13 strikeouts marked the most for a Tech pitcher since Amanda Renfro fanned a school record 15 hitters twice during the 2001 season. Aucoin returned to the circle later in the evening to pick up the save in Tech’s 5-4 victory by striking out the side in the seventh. The Ocean Springs, Miss. native ended the night having her final eight outs coming via strikeouts. The save was the first of two on the week for Aucoin, who also provided two innings of no-hit relief in the series finale against Texas State where she struck out four. It marked the fifth save of the year for Aucoin which is tied for the national lead entering this week.
The sophomore also broke the Tech single-season and career records with the save as she now has seven in just over a season with the Red Raiders. Aucoin closed the week with a 0.93 ERA in 15.0 innings where she surrendered just two runs while striking out an impressive 26 hitters during that span. Aucoin ended the week ranked second in the Big 12 with a 1.18 ERA.
