Baylor Claims Big 12 Women's Tennis Title Outright

With a 4-3 win over Texas, the Baylor women’s tennis team has clinched the 2014 Big 12 regular season crown outright.

No. 14 Baylor (21-6, 9-0 Big 12) took the final three points in a third-set tiebreaker at fourth singles to escape with a 4-3 win over No. 20 Texas (11-11, 6-3 Big 12) Friday evening.Tthe match was decided by the fourth singles contest featuring Texas' Neda Koprcina and Baylor's Blair Shankle.  Koprcina trailed 4-1 in the third set before holding serve, breaking Shankle and holding once more to even the set at four.  Both players held serve until the match progressed to a tiebreaker.  A Shankle forehand winner put away the narrow victory for Baylor.

Baylor recently clinched a share for the Big 12 title after taking down Oklahoma, 6-1, last Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center. After securing the doubles point for the 19th-straight match, 45th-ranked Kiah Generette snagged the final point of the match for BU.

The Bears have now won or shared 10 Big 12 regular season titles, including nine of the last 10. The 2014 Bears are the 12th team to finish conference play undefeated in the 18-year history of the league.

Next up for the Bears is the Big 12 Championships in Fort Worth. The league's ten squads will meet at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Complex April 24-27.
