Big 12 Player of the Week
Linsey Hays, Baylor, So., DP/LF, Brock, Texas
Hays hit .563 in five games this week for Baylor helping the Lady Bears to a 5-0 record including a Big 12 sweep of Iowa State. She hit four home runs and drove in 11 runs on the week. The sophomore was 9-for-16 at the plate with six runs scored. She hit a two-run single and a three-run home run in Baylor’s series finale win at Iowa State Sunday. Hays extended her hitting streak to seven games, and she’s hitting .619 (13-for-21) at the plate during that seven-game stretch.
Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week
Whitney Canion, Baylor, Sr., LHP, Aledo, Texas
Canion threw the fifth no-hitter of her career April 30 vs. McNeese State at home, and she struck out a season-high 14. It was her Big 12-leading 10th shutout and it marked the second time in her career that she achieved a seven-inning no-hitter. Friday at Iowa State, Canion moved to third all-time on the Big 12’s career list for victories with her 116th career win. She passed OU’s Jennifer Stewart (115, 1999-2002) for third on the list. She helped Baylor cap a sweep Sunday with four innings of two-hit ball to pick up her third win of the week. All in all, Canion was 3-0 on the week with a 1.65 ERA, and she struck out 25 batters in 17 innings of work.
Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week
Kelsey Stevens, Oklahoma, So., RHP, Albuquerque, N.M.
Stevens won all three of her starts last week, including a pair of 11-strikeout efforts over Texas Tech to help the Sooners clinch a share of the Big 12 title.
To start the week, Stevens got the victory in a rule-win at Arkansas as she took a no-hitter into the fourth inning. She allowed two hits in the win with six strikeouts and two runs allowed on a two-run homer.
In the series opener against Texas Tech, Stevens tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. She faced just two batters over the minimum before giving up a one-out single in the sixth inning. Four base runners reached based but not one reached second base. She allowed two hits and two walks as she threw her eighth shutout of the season.
Stevens followed that performance with another 11-strikeout outing the next day. Her only mistake was a solo homer in the fifth, but Stevens walked none and allowed just three total hits. The win was her 31st of the season, tying for the most in the season.
In two games against the Red Raiders, Stevens struck out 22 and walked just two in 14 innings with an ERA of 0.50.
