K-State Pair, KU Setter Earn Weekly Accolades
October 13, 2014

K-State’s Katie Reininger and Katie Brand along with Kansas’ Ainise Havili have been named Big 12 volleyball weekly award winners for matches played Oct. 7-12.

This marks just the second time the Wildcats have collected the offensive and defensive weekly accolades in the same week (Sept. 20, 2010) as Reiniger claims the Offensive Player of the Week and Brand earns Defensive Player of the Week. Havili is the Rookie of the Week.

Offensive Player of the Week
Katie Reininger, K-State, RSo., MB, Colorado Springs, Colo./Saint Mary’s
In K-State’s only match of the week, the redshirt sophomore paced the Wildcats in kills with a match-high 14 on a season-high .522 hitting percentage to help lead K-State to a 3-1 win over Iowa State on Oct. 8, the team’s third consecutive win and 16th victory overall this year. Reininger added seven block assists, her most ever in a Big 12 match, and an ace to total a match-high 18.5 points. The middle blocker was nearly perfect on her first nine attacks of the match, recording eight kills in the first set for a .889 hitting percentage. She added three kills on four attempts in the second, helping K-State take a 2-0 lead in the match. For the week, Reininger was the only Big 12 player ranked in the top 10 for hitting percentage (third), points per set (fifth), kills per set (ninth) and blocks per set (tied second).

Defensive Player of the Week
Katie Brand, K-State, RSo., S, Grand Island, Neb./Central Catholic
The redshirt sophomore had a team-best 13 digs and tied for the team-lead with seven blocks in a 3-1 win vs. Iowa State last Wednesday, helping K-State register 14.0 blocks and holding the Cyclones to a .149 hitting percentage. The setter was the only Big 12 player to average more than three digs and 1.75 blocks per set last week as she ranked tied for second in blocks per set (1.75) and sixth in digs per set (3.25). Also, Brand’s 13 digs paired up with her 42 assists helped her tally her 12th straight double-double—the longest streak in K-State history—and 14th overall double-double this season. In conference matches this season, Brand is ninth in the Big 12 in digs per set (3.12) while she is averaging 1.12 blocks per set.

Rookie of the Week
Ainise Havili, Kansas, S, Fort Worth, Texas/Haltom
On the road against Baylor, freshman setter Havili totaled a career-high 56 assists (good for a 14.00 average to lead the league) and 13 digs, picking up her ninth double-double of the year and fifth in the last six matches. Besides topping the Big 12 in assists for the week, she also ranked second in service aces and tied for sixth in digs. For her young career, Havili already has nine double-doubles in only 18 career contests, good for third-most in the Big 12. Her 56 digs last week marked her fifth 50-plus performance of the season. Havili also cracked the 700-assist mark (760) and is now only 30 away from breaking into the top-five of KU’s freshman assists record.
