West Virginia Wins Soccer Championship
November 09, 2014

Kansas City, Mo.  - No. 1 West Virginia claimed its second straight Big 12 postseason title with a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma in the final game of the 2014 Big 12 Championship held at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.

The Mountaineers netted the game’s only goal 12 minutes into what turned out to be a defensive battle that saw 10 total shots on goal. Following a pass from Amanda Hill, eventual Big 12 Offensive Most Valuable Player Kate Schwindel needed only to tap the ball towards the goal to have it trickle past the Oklahoma keeper.

With the go-ahead goal in hand, the Mountaineers turned their attention to controlling offensive possessions, only allowing OU four total shots on goal in the contest. When the dust settled, Hannah Steadman, who was also named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team, recorded her 10th shutout of the season and third clean sheet of the championship.  This was also West Virginia’s second shutout in a championship game, and their sixth straight shutout in Big 12 postseason play.

Following the contest, West Virginia was awarded its fifth regular season or postseason championship trophy since joining the Big 12.  It was WVU’s second Big 12 hardware this year after winning the regular season title just a week ago.

The full NCAA Championship field will be revealed on Monday during the selection show, which will be streamed live on beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. CT.
