For the second straight week and third time this season, Kansas’ Kelsie Payne has been named the Big 12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week. Adrien Richburg (Baylor) and Alyssa Schultejans (K-State) have also been recognized with Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Payne becomes the first Jayhawk to win three Offensive Player of the Week honors in the same season and is one of nine student-athletes to earn three or more of the award in the same year in Big 12 history. Richburg and Schultejans are first-time weekly award recipients.
Offensive Player of the Week
Kelsie Payne, Kansas, So., RS, Austin, Texas/John B. Connally
Payne totaled 22 kills on a .486 hitting percentage as Kansas defeated Oklahoma, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in Norman to improve to 22-1 and 10-1 in Big 12 action. In the only match of the week for KU, Payne poured in seven kills in the first set against the Sooners and went on to record just one attacking error during the last three sets of the match, finishing with a 22-4-37 line. She has reached 20 kills in two of the last three matches. She topped the conference for the week with 5.50 kills per set and 5.50 points per set, while ranking seventh in hitting. Big 12 players have reached 20 kills in a match seven times this season during league play with Payne accounting for three of those matches, doing so with a .401 hitting percentage when recording 20 kills or more.
Defensive Player of the Week
Adrien Richburg, Baylor, Sr., MH, Rowlett, Texas/Sachse
Richburg set the tone for BU’s undefeated week, carrying the team with 16 blocks as the Bears recorded wins against Texas Tech and West Virginia. She led the conference with 2.29 blocks per set and held the top two blocking performances of the week in Big 12 play, with 10 against TTU and six against WVU. On Wednesday, she recorded a career-high 10 blocks against Tech, becoming one of eight players in the Big 12 with a double-digit block performance this season. It ties for the third-best Big 12 single-match mark of the season, and the second-best in a four-set match. Against WVU on Saturday, she added six blocks, which was the second-highest in the conference for the week to her 10 on Wednesday.
Rookie of the Week
Alyssa Schultejans, Kansas State, Fr., OH, Silver Lake, Kan./Silver Lake
Schultejans led all Big 12 freshmen last week in kills (3.33), points (3.67) and aces (0.33) per set as the outside hitter helped lead K-State to its fourth-straight win with a sweep of Texas Tech on Saturday. She totaled 10 kills against the Red Raiders as she was one of only two hitters in the match to reach double-digits. She also added six digs (one shy of her career-high) and her team-leading 20th ace of the season. The double-digit kill effort by Schultejans was her second in as many matches and 11th this season. Her 20 aces, meanwhile, are the most by a K-State freshman since 2013 (Katie Brand, 27).
