Hield, Olivier Capture Menís Basketball Awards

The latest conference men’s basketball honors have a Bedlam flavor as Buddy Hield (Oklahoma) and Chris Olivier (Oklahoma State) have been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week. Hield is recognized for the third time in his career, while Olivier is named top newcomer for the first time.

Hield helped guide the Sooners to a 2-0 record to begin the year, averaging 27.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks in 29.0 minutes per game. The senior guard shot 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the field, including 60 percent (9-of-15) from 3-point range. He started the week with a game-high 30 points with eight rebounds as the Sooners recorded their first series win against Memphis. Hield followed that with a 24-point outing in 23 minutes of the OU home opener versus McNeese State.

Olivier averaged 15.3 points and 4.0 rebounds as the Cowboys posted a 3-1 record in four games last week. The senior transfer scored in double figures in all four contests and shot 50 percent or better in each outing as well. He converted 15-of-21 (.714) from the free throw line and added 13 blocked shots, including multiple rejections in each of the four outings. Olivier also added two assists and had just two turnovers. He leads the Cowboys in scoring with 15.0 points per game.
