Top Tournament Performers Earn Basketball Honors

Three players who contributed strong performances at Thanksgiving week tournaments have earned the latest Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week awards. Juniors Monté Morris (Iowa State) and Wayne Selden, Jr. (Kansas) are named top player, while Eric Davis, Jr. (Texas) is the top newcomer. All three are recognized with their respective accolades for the first time.

Monté Morris, Iowa State, G, 6-3, 175, Jr., Flint, Mich./Beecher
Morris averaged 16 points, 7.7 assists and four rebounds on his way to earning Emerald Coast Classic Most Outstanding Player honors. The junior guard had his best game in the final, finishing with 20 points and a career-high nine rebounds to go along with six assists in the win over Illinois. In three games last week, he dished out 23 assists and had just one turnover. Morris has been in double figures in all five games this season.

Selden was named co-MVP of the Maui Invitational after averaging 19.3 points as the Jayhawks won the title. The junior guard shot 66.7 percent from the field, including 70.6 percent from 3-point range, while adding 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. He had his top performance in the championship game, matching his career-high with 25 points in a victory over No. 19 Vanderbilt. Selden scored at least 15 points in each victory in Maui and leads Kansas with 17.0 points per game.

Eric Davis Jr., G, 6-2, 185, Fr., Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill
Davis averaged a team-high 15.3 points in three games at the Battle 4 Atlantis. The freshman guard scored in double digits in all three outings, with a season-high 19 points versus Texas A&M. He converted 15-of-24 (.625) field goals at the tournament, including 7-of-13 (.538) from 3-point range. For the year, Davis ranks third on the team in scoring (11.4 ppg) while shooting 46.3 percent.
