Evan Skoug (TCU) has been named the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, while the Oklahoma State pitching duo of Trey Cobb and Jensen Elliott are this week’s Pitcher of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively.
Cobb earns his second Pitcher of the Week honor on the year as Oklahoma State has totaled five awards in the category. The Pokes are only the seventh team in conference history to record five or more Pitcher of the Week honors in a single season and the first since Oklahoma in 2013. Included in those honors is Elliott, who now has two career awards in his rookie campaign.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Evan Skoug, TCU, So., C, Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville
Skoug led the Big 12 on the week with a .600 average in four games, including hitting a .571 (4-for-7) in the series sweep over Oklahoma. Between Tuesday’s game and Friday’s game, Skoug reached base in eight straight plate appearances en route to posting a .688 on-base percentage. Against Dallas Baptist on Tuesday, the sophomore went 2-for-3 with a walk. In Friday’s opener against Oklahoma, Skoug was 4-for-4 with a walk, reaching base all five times he came to the plate. He drove in a career-high five runs with the help of a double and a home run. In game two against Oklahoma, Skoug drew a walk and scored a run. He notched his sixth RBI of the weekend with a first-inning sacrifice fly. In game three, he drew two walks and scored TCU’s second run of the game in the eighth inning.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Trey Cobb, Oklahoma State, Jr., RHP, Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow
Cobb had a career day against Baylor in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader as he earned his fourth victory of the season and helped Oklahoma State clinch its first series win in Waco since 1998.
A right-hander, Cobb threw 126 pitches over a career-high eight innings of work and racked up 12 strikeouts, which tied for the highest total in a matchup of Big 12 teams this season and was one shy of his career best. The junior scattered seven hits (six singles and a double) and allowed three runs, only two of them earned, while walking just one. Cobb’s 12-strikeout effort marked the second time this season he’s reached double digits, and he now ranks third in the conference with 58 punchouts on the season.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Jensen Elliott, Oklahoma State, Fr., RHP, Coppell, Texas/Coppell
Elliott was the winning pitcher in the series finale at Baylor to help Oklahoma State complete a series sweep of the Bears. A right-handed freshman, he tossed seven innings and allowed only one run on two hits, both singles, in the Cowboys’ 3-1 victory. At one point, he retired 13-straight Bears, and he did not allow a hit over his final 4.2 innings of work. Elliott’s win was his fourth of the season, which is tied for second most on the Cowboys and seventh in the Big 12, as he improved to 4-2.
