Records Fall as ‘Horns Hold Lead Heading to Final Round

Trinity, Texas - A night of thunderstorms gave way to a day of sunshine and low scores in round three of the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship from Whispering Pines Golf Club, with seven of 10 teams shooting even-par or better rounds, including first-place Texas (+1, 865 overall). Oklahoma’s Grant Hirschman also fired off an impressive 63 (-9) to set a new Big 12 Championship record low round.

Hirschman’s 63 surpassed Texas’ Bobby Hudson who shot a 64 on the same course in 2010. Additionally, his score moved him into a tie for second place overall at -4 (212) for the championship.

Not to be outdone, the Longhorns shot -8 (280) on the day. UT’s Doug Ghim shot -5 (67) and teammate Gavin Hall pitched in a four-under par 68.. Longhorn Beau Hossler shot even par (72) to remain the only player to not have a round over par yet in the tournament.

Oklahoma State also shot -8 today to remain in second place (+8, 872 overall), seven shots back of Texas. Cowboy Stratton Nolen shot -4 (68) to help the Cowboys to the record day while also putting himself in a tie for second place individually (-4 overall, 212).

TCU’s Paul Barjon posted a -4 (68) to move into sole possession of first place individually at -6 overall (210). OSU’s Nolen, OU’s Hirschman and K-State’s Jeremy Gandon are all just two shots back at -4 (212). UT’s Ghim (-3, 213) and Hossler (-2, 214) are also under par through the first three rounds.

Back on the team side, Texas Tech finished round three in third place at (+10, 874) and Oklahoma ended in fourth (+21, 885) after both shot -7 (281) today. TCU and Baylor also shot -7 in round three to finish the day in fifth (+25, 889) and sixth place respectively (+26, 890). Kansas State (+29, 893) and Kansas (+41, 905) sit seventh and eighth, and Iowa State (+45, 909) and West Virginia (+50,914) round out the field.

Final round action begins tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. CT with TCU and BU teeing off from hole No. 1, followed by K-State and KU on hole 10 at 8:22 a.m. TTU and OU then get going from hole one at 8:45 a.m. and ISU and WVU hit from hole 10 at 9:07 a.m. Finally, UT and OSU begin their final rounds at 9:30 a.m. from hole number one.
