Kansas’ Daina Levy and Texas Tech’s Trey Culver have been named the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Both athletes earned a first place finish in their respective events while also putting up impressive numbers on a national level this past week. It marks the first career weekly honor for Culver, and the first outdoor honor for Levy who grabbed an indoor award earlier this year.

BIG 12 TRACK & FIELD MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Trey Culver, Texas Tech, High Jump, Jr., Lubbock, Texas
Culver picked up a first-place finish in the men’s high jump last weekend at the Drake Relays. He cruised over the bar at 2.22m/7-3.25 on his first attempt to earn the win, and took three more attempts at the Olympic qualifying bar (2.29m/7-6), but came up just short in his quest. The 2016 NCAA leader in the event, Culver had the best mark of anyone in the country last weekend, and was the only Big 12 athlete to clear seven feet over the weekend. On top of that, he was the only Big 12 male athlete to record a mark that was the best collegiate mark of the weekend among last week’s competition. Culver was the first Texas Tech athlete to win the high jump at the Drake Relays since 1959.

BIG 12 TRACK & FIELD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Daina Levy, Kansas, Hammer Throw, Sr., Ontario, Canada
Levy was once again one of the Jayhawks’ top performers over the weekend, claiming her second hammer throw win of the 2016 season at the Rock Chalk Classic. The Jamaican national record holder in the event found her form in the fifth round after Kansas State’s Sara Savatovic displaced her atop the overall leaderboard. Levy then regained the lead, rewrote the facility record and jumped up the national rankings all with one attempt when she unwound for a season-best mark of 68.35 meters (224’3”). The throw, which topped the Rock Chalk Park facility record previously held by Savatovic, earned Levy the victory by over 11 feet. Levy’s mark was the second-farthest of her career and ranks third on KU’s all-time hammer throw list. The performance also moved the senior to No. 2 in the NCAA rankings this season, as well as inside the top-30 of the latest world ranks.
