Sooners Crowned Champions

The Oklahoma Sooners were crowned champions in the first Big 12 Softball Championship in seven years. OU, which was the last institution to win the postseason honor (2010), defeated Oklahoma State 2-0 in USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Nicole Pendley recorded the game-winning play in the bottom of the fifth, when she notched a two-run home run. OU, led by Coach Patty Gasso, will enter the NCAA tournament with a 50-8 record and its fifth postseason title with its belt.

Paige Parker was named Most Outstanding Player following the event. Parker, along with Shelby Friudenberg (BU), Jessie Scroggins (BU), Kelsee Selman (BU), Caleigh Clifton (OU), Nicole Mendes (OU), Nicole Pendley (OU), Sydney Romero (OU), Maddi Holcomb (OSU), Taylor Lynch (OSU) and Brandi Needham (OSU) were named to the All-Tournament Team. The honors are voted on by media members and the team's Sports Information Directors.

In the first game of the day, Texas Tech earned the 1-0 Game 7 victory over Iowa State. In Game 8, Baylor sailed by Texas, 7-0.

The 2017 NCAA Division I Softball Selection Show will air Sunday evening at 9 p.m. CT on on ESPN2. Oklahoma, the 2016 National Champions, will receive the automatic bid following today's win.
