Longhorns Advance to Championship With 9-3 Win Over Horned Frogs

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 6 Texas bounced back from a loss earlier in the day to knock off and eliminate the defending champs, No. 2 TCU in the Saturday nightcap.  The Longhorns' 9-3 victory helps them clinch a berth in Sunday's Big 12 Championship game.

The Longhorns came out swinging and registered three hits in the first inning.  Kacy Clemens, Austin Todd and Ryan Reynolds all accounted for one RBI each and put Texas up by three.

In the second, TCU began chipping away on Texas' lead.  A Josh Watson sacrifice fly RBI and Evan Williams RBI single resulted in a one-run game. 

Texas' bats paid off in the fifth inning as Michael Cantu blasted a three-run homer to extend the lead to 6-2.

The Longhorns continued to step on the gas pedal as they led off the eighth inning with back-to-back hits.  They would receive two runs from two consecutive walks. 

TCU responded by reaching home on a bases-loaded fielding error, cutting the lead to five. Texas' Richard Mathis then added a lead by a solo home run to cap off the victory. 

Texas was led by freshman Blair Henley who held the Horned Frogs to four hits and two runs in six innings.  Michael Cantu would go 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs.

The Horned Frogs would leave nine runners on base in today's matchup.


Big 12 Championship Notes

  • TCU is currently 12-7 all-time in the Big 12 Championship.
  • UT is currently 40-29 all-time in the Big 12 Championship.
  • Texas and TCU are now tied 2-2 in all-time series of Big 12 Championship play.
  • No. 2 seeds are currently 43-33 all-time in the Big 12 Championship.
  • No. 6 seeds are currently 38-31 all-time in the Big 12 Championship.
  • Texas has reached the championship semifinals for the last 4 years (2014-2017) after missing the Championship in 2013.
  • TCU eliminated Texas from the 2016 Big 12 Championship to advance to the title game against West Virginia. TCU would go on to beat West Virginia and win the Big 12 Championship.
  • TCU is now eliminated with their second loss of championship play.  Texas advances and will match up in the 2017 Big 12 Championship game against Oklahoma State Sunday at 1 p.m.

TCU (42-16, 3-2 Big 12 Championship)

  • The Horned Frogs had five hits vs. Texas.  TCU had six games this season where they had five hits or less.  TCU drops to 2-4 when having less than five hits.
  • Starting pitcher Haylen Green pitched 2.0 innings giving up three earned runs on three hits.

Texas (37-21, 3-1 Big 12 Championship)

  • During the regular season, Texas outscored opponents 47 to 19 in the first inning.  They jumped out to early 3-0 lead on the Horned Frogs.  The Longhorns have outscored opponents 7-4 in the first inning thus far in 2017 Big 12 Championship play.
  • Blair Henley was impressive throwing 6.0 innings and giving up only two runs on four hits.  Chase Shugart came in for relief and pitching 2.0 scoreless innings.  This was Shugart's second appearance of the tournament.  Texas pitchers held TCU to no extra-base hits.
  • Cantu hit a towering 3-run homerun to mark his was his sixth of the year and first of the Big 12 Championship play.  His home run came with two outs in the top of the fifth.  Cantu added on a double in the ninth going 3-for-5 on the night.
  • No. 6 Texas advances to the Big 12 Championship game. Texas last appearance in the Big 12 Championship game came in 2015.


0 – UT's pitching and defense did not allow any extra base hits in today's afternoon contest.


With the win, Texas advances to face No. 8 Oklahoma State in the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship final.  First pitch for Sunday's contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.  With the Horned Frogs' loss, they finish at 44-17 and 3-2 in Championship play. TCU waits to learn their postseason fate on Monday.
