Russell Luna

Title: Assistant Director - Media Services

Russell Luna is in his second year with the Big 12, after joining the Conference as the assistant director of media services in 2017. Luna assists with all media services efforts including baseball, women’s basketball, football and other duties.


Prior to joining the Big 12 office, Luna spent three seasons as the associate director of athletic communications at West Virginia University.


During his tenure at West Virginia, Luna has helped promote All-America campaigns for WNBA first round pick Bria Holmes and Mountaineer standout Tynice Martin. Holmes was honored as a four-time All-America Honorable Mention and a 2016 Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American. In 2014-15, senior Averee Fields was named a Haier America Achievement Award winner and a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team honoree. Additionally, Luna’s 2016-17 women’s basketball media guide was voted best in the country by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


Prior to his arrival at WVU, Luna spent two years as the assistant director of athletic communications at his alma mater Middle Tennessee. While with the Blue Raiders, Luna handled publicity for the nationally-ranked women’s basketball program, baseball, women’s tennis and assisted as the secondary contact for football. Luna promoted several athletes at MT, including baseball All-American Trent Miller and women’s basketball All-American Ebony Rowe.


Before serving in a full-time capacity with the Blue Raiders, Luna spent one year as assistant athletic media relations director at Tennessee State University. He was the contact for football, men’s basketball, tennis and track & field.


In 2010-11, Luna served as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and interned full-time at Western Carolina University in 2009-10. As an undergraduate intern, Luna interned with various organizations including the Houston Astros and Tennessee Titans.


Luna has numerous event experience, working the past seven NCAA Final Fours (two men and five women). Luna also has served as a media relations volunteer for the Music City Bowl and the NCAA Women’s Soccer College Cup.


As an active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Luna is a member of the Capital One Academic All-America committee. He previously worked on the new media/technology committee for two years. Additionally, Luna is on the board of directors for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA).


A native of Flintville, Tennessee, Luna graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2009 with a bachelor of science in electronic media communications journalism and Luna obtained his master of arts in journalism from the University of Memphis.
